With no money and big plans, Makoci escapes Communism to become a political activist, lawyer, and world traveler. Era Makoci is a mother, lawyer, political activist, world-traveler, polyglot, and Winner of the 2005 World’s Best Mom Award (Category: Nagging), now living off the tiny island of Manhattan on the even tinier Roosevelt Island.
Born in the city of Vlorë, Albania, and raised in Fier, Makoci spent much of her adolescence backstage at the town’s theater, where her parents worked. Seduced by a childhood dream, she entered the Academy of Arts in Tirana, majoring in Theater Directing, but as Communism was falling, she had to leave school. She left Albania altogether and made her way to Greece. In Athens, she managed for the most part to avoid being apprehended by the Greek police as an undocumented alien, except for two very unfortunate occasions. Despite her lack of working papers, she managed to find employment, often holding two jobs at once while earning an Associate’s Degree in Aesthetics.
