Dr. Anna Kohen was born in Vlorë, Albania, after World War II. Her family had to go into hiding in
Trevëllazër, a village near Vlorë, when the Germans occupied Albania, and they were saved by the
locals in the village. Vera and Kadri Lazaj gave shelter to Kohen’s parents, grandparents, and little brother. They changed their names to Muslim names.
Everyone in the village knew, but no one betrayed them. “Albania was one of the only European countries that had more Jews at the end of the war than at the beginning of World War II,” says Dr. Kohen.
Kohen left Albania in 1966, along with her seven family members, and moved to Greece. She completed her dentistry studies there and then relocated to the United States, where she continued her studies at New York University’s Dental School. She received a DDS Dental Degree in 1976.
